Material choice is never neutral. In recent years, much discussion has centered around alternatives to leather — often described as vegan leather. These materials can be made from plant-based sources such as fruit fibers or mycelium, but they frequently rely on synthetic binders and coatings derived from fossil fuels to achieve durability and structure.

We understand why the conversation exists. Many people do not wish to wear animal products. That position deserves respect. Our approach is different. The leather we use is a byproduct of the food industry. The animals are not raised for their hides alone. If meat consumption exists, the hide exists. To discard it while continuing to consume the animal would, in our view, disregard the material entirely. We believe that if an animal is used for food, the responsible position is to use the material fully and respectfully — and to build products that last long enough to justify that use. Durability matters. Longevity matters.

Repairability matters. Full-grain leather, when properly tanned and constructed, can last decades. It can be repaired, resoled, conditioned, and restored. It ages rather than disintegrates. Many contemporary alternatives, while innovative in intent, still rely on plastic-based binders and coatings to achieve structural integrity. These materials often have shorter lifespans and limited repairability. We do not dismiss innovation. We follow developments in plant-based and bio-engineered materials with interest. If a material can meet our standards for structural performance, repairability, and long-term use — without relying heavily on fossil-derived components — we would consider it seriously. At present, we choose leather because it allows us to build products that endure, that can be repaired, and that age with dignity. Material choice is not only about origin. It is about full lifecycle.

We respect that not everyone will agree with our position. But we believe in clarity over trend — and in making decisions based on long-term responsibility rather than short-term alignment.
